Threatened by feral cats and foxes, the total remaining population size of the endangered numbat (also known as Walpurti or Banded Ant-eater) is estimated at less than 1,000 individuals (Australian Wildlife Council).
Perth Zoo's Numbat breed-for-release program - which began in 1987 - has seen over 200 numbats bred and released into reserves in South Australia, New South Wales and Western Australia.
